Andhra Pradesh Milk Adulteration Tragedy Leaves 16 Dead After Ethylene Glycol Contamination
A shocking milk adulteration tragedy in Andhra Pradesh has claimed 16 lives after contaminated milk reportedly containing Ethylene Glycol caused severe kidney failure, raising serious concerns about food safety systems.

Deadly milk contamination shocks Andhra Pradesh
A devastating tragedy has unfolded in Andhra Pradesh where contaminated milk has claimed the lives of 16 people, leaving several families grieving. The incident has sparked outrage and serious concern over the safety of everyday food products that people consume without suspicion.
Authorities confirmed that the milk supplied to several households in East Godavari district contained Ethylene Glycol, a highly toxic chemical. The substance is commonly used in antifreeze products for vehicles and can severely damage human organs when ingested.
How the tragedy unfolded
The incident reportedly began on February 22 when milk was distributed from a local dairy unit in Narsapuram village. Nearly 100 families in nearby localities received the supply and consumed the milk as part of their daily routine.
Within hours, several residents including children and elderly people began experiencing severe vomiting and sudden health complications. Many victims also stopped passing urine, a dangerous symptom that pointed to acute kidney failure.
Doctors who examined the patients found that their blood urea and serum creatinine levels had increased to extremely dangerous levels. Several victims had to be rushed to hospitals where emergency dialysis and ventilator support were provided.
Investigation reveals toxic chemical
Initial investigations by health officials and food safety authorities uncovered a disturbing detail. Tests confirmed the presence of Ethylene Glycol in the milk samples distributed by the dairy unit.
Medical experts explained that this chemical is extremely harmful to the human body and directly affects the kidneys. Once consumed, it can rapidly lead to organ failure if treatment is not provided in time. At present, a few patients are still receiving treatment in intensive care units and remain in critical condition.
Police action and ongoing probe
Following the shocking discovery, authorities launched a large scale investigation into the dairy supply chain. Police have arrested a suspected milk vendor believed to be connected to the distribution of the contaminated milk.
Officials have collected samples of milk, curd, ghee and even water from the dairy facility for laboratory testing. Investigators are also examining animal feed and other materials to determine how the contamination occurred.
A team of senior doctors from Hyderabad has been brought in to assist with the treatment of affected patients. Health teams also conducted door to door surveys in the impacted neighbourhoods to identify additional victims and prevent further casualties.
Serious questions over food safety
The tragedy has raised troubling questions about food safety and monitoring systems. Milk, which is a daily necessity for millions of families, unexpectedly turned into a deadly poison in this case.
Experts say the incident highlights the urgent need for stricter quality checks, stronger regulation of dairy suppliers and regular inspections of food production units. Authorities have stated that the situation is currently under control, but the investigation is continuing to uncover the full source of the contamination and hold those responsible accountable.
