The Andhra Pradesh government is set to introduce a new livelihood initiative aimed at strengthening the economic independence of women in urban areas. The scheme focuses on setting up egg marts across districts, providing women with a ready made opportunity to earn without investing their own money.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, the coalition government has prioritised women centric welfare programmes. This latest initiative is designed to support poor urban women by helping them establish small food vending units in busy public locations.
As part of the plan, ten egg marts will be established in each district, taking the total to around 260 units across the state. Each selected beneficiary will receive financial assistance worth fifty thousand rupees through the National Egg Coordination Committee. Of this amount, carts and essential equipment will be provided using thirty five thousand rupees, while eggs worth fifteen thousand rupees will be supplied initially.
The egg marts will be located on main roads and at major junctions to ensure steady customer flow. Women will be encouraged to sell eggs along with simple food items prepared on site, creating multiple income options from a single unit.
Selection of beneficiaries will be carried out through Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas. Priority will be given to self help group members who currently have no regular income and to single women. Applicants will be required to submit a self declaration covering prescribed eligibility conditions.
Officials said this is the first time urban self help group members are being offered livelihood units without any personal investment. Before the launch, selected women will receive training on business management and food preparation to help them run the units successfully.
The government aims to complete beneficiary selection by the end of this month and begin operations next month. Officials believe the scheme will open a rare and sustainable employment pathway for urban women while strengthening grassroots entrepreneurship across Andhra Pradesh.
