Public transport in Andhra Pradesh is set for a major upgrade as the state prepares to introduce 750 electric buses across 11 cities under the PM E Bus Seva scheme. Officials have been directed to fast track all necessary arrangements to ensure smooth implementation of this ambitious project.

The initiative is expected to significantly reduce fuel consumption and help control pollution levels in urban areas. Transport officials highlighted that the shift towards electric buses will bring long term environmental and economic benefits while improving the overall travel experience for passengers.

These buses will operate in key cities including Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, Tirupati, Nellore, Kurnool, Kadapa, Anantapur, Rajamahendravaram, Kakinada and Amaravati. Authorities have already introduced electric buses in Tirupati, setting the stage for a wider rollout across the state.

To support the new fleet, infrastructure development is underway with an investment of over 129 crore across 12 depots. The funding is being shared between the central and state governments, with the Centre contributing the majority share. Officials have also been instructed to train staff for efficient operation and maintenance of electric buses.

Alongside this development, the state is planning to phase out buses older than 15 years to modernize the transport system. This move is expected to enhance safety standards and operational efficiency across APSRTC services.

In a parallel development, the government has introduced a health insurance scheme for RTC employees and their families. The scheme provides financial protection during medical emergencies and ensures access to quality healthcare. Employees can choose from different coverage plans that continue even after retirement, offering long term security.

With these steps, Andhra Pradesh is moving towards a cleaner and more efficient public transport system while also strengthening employee welfare within the transport sector.
