WhatsApp Tests Feature to Show Contact Photos Even Without Profile Pictures
New update aims to replace blank profile images with saved contact photos from users address books improving identification and personalization while maintaining privacy controls across chats and contacts seamlessly

A new feature being tested by WhatsApp could soon change the way users identify contacts on the platform. Instead of seeing blank profile icons, users may begin to see photos pulled directly from their phone’s address book when a contact has not set a display picture.
The feature has surfaced in recent beta updates and is currently available to select testers. According to insights shared by WABetaInfo, the update is being rolled out through Apple’s TestFlight platform, giving early access to users running newer beta versions.
This change is designed to make conversations more visually intuitive. In many cases, users struggle to identify contacts, especially when multiple entries share similar names. By using images already saved in the device’s contact list, WhatsApp aims to eliminate confusion and make chats feel more personal.
Importantly, the feature does not alter or upload any user’s actual profile picture on WhatsApp. The images are only displayed locally on the user’s device. This means that if a contact has not uploaded a profile photo, their saved image from the address book will appear only for the viewer and not for others.
There are specific situations where this functionality becomes particularly useful. For instance, if a user has not set any profile picture, WhatsApp may display the image linked to their own contact card within the app settings. However, this image remains private and is not visible to other users.
Another scenario involves privacy settings. If someone restricts their profile photo visibility by selecting options like Nobody or limiting access to certain contacts, others might not see their official display picture. In such cases, if a photo is already saved in the viewer’s address book, WhatsApp can show that image instead, ensuring the contact remains recognizable in chats.
The feature is expected to be especially helpful in group conversations, where identifying participants quickly is often challenging. Even if a person chooses not to upload a profile picture, others can still recognize them through images they have personally saved.
For users who value privacy, the update strikes a careful balance. It does not override personal settings or force anyone to upload a profile image. Instead, it enhances the viewing experience based on information already available on individual devices.
At present, the feature is limited to a small group of beta users, but its gradual rollout suggests that WhatsApp is gathering feedback before a wider release. Some users with the latest app updates may also start noticing this change, indicating a broader testing phase.
If fully implemented, this update could quietly transform how people interact on WhatsApp, making conversations clearer without compromising user control over personal data.
