India Bangladesh Relations Improve as Dhaka Reopens Visa Services
After months of diplomatic strain, Bangladesh has fully resumed visa services for Indian citizens, marking a significant step toward rebuilding trust, cooperation, and people to people engagement between the two neighbours.

- Bangladesh resumes full visa services for Indian citizens
- Tourist medical business and work visas restored without limits
- Move signals renewed focus on improving India Bangladesh relations
Relations between India and Bangladesh appear to be entering a positive phase once again. In a key diplomatic move, Bangladesh has restored full visa services for Indian nationals, easing travel for tourism, medical treatment, business, and employment without any fresh restrictions.
From Friday, February 20, the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi resumed issuing visas to Indian citizens across all categories. Officials confirmed that regular processing has restarted, bringing relief to thousands who were affected by the earlier suspension.
Visa services had been curtailed during a period of strain in bilateral relations under the previous interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus. Diplomatic engagement slowed, and routine people to people movement was disrupted amid growing tensions between the two countries.
The situation began to change after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party recorded a decisive victory in the February 2026 parliamentary elections. Following the results, BNP leader Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman assumed office as Prime Minister. One of his early priorities has been repairing ties with New Delhi.
Soon after taking charge, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman focused on restoring diplomatic confidence and addressing areas where relations had weakened. The decision to restart visa services for Indians is being seen as a strong signal of goodwill and a practical step toward normalising bilateral engagement.
International observers believe this move could help revive broader cooperation between India and Bangladesh, particularly in trade, healthcare, education, and tourism. With travel channels reopening, both governments are expected to explore further measures to strengthen ties in the coming months.
