A major political shift unfolded in West Bengal after the BJP registered a commanding victory in the Falta Assembly repoll, turning what was once considered a stronghold of the ruling party into one of the biggest talking points in the state’s political landscape. The result triggered strong reactions from national and state leaders, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling it a victory for democracy.

The BJP candidate Debangshu Panda emerged as the winner with an impressive 1,49,666 votes and secured a huge lead of 1,09,021 votes over his nearest rival Shambhu Nath Kurmi of the CPI M, who received 40,645 votes. Congress candidate Abdur Razak Molla polled 10,084 votes.

One of the biggest surprises of the election came from the performance of the ruling Trinamool Congress. TMC candidate Jahangir Khan managed only 7,783 votes and slipped to fourth place, eventually losing his deposit. The outcome has sparked discussions over changing political equations in the region.

Reacting to the result through a social media post, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Debangshu Panda and thanked the people of West Bengal for placing their trust in the BJP. He stated that the verdict showed people had spoken clearly and that politics based on fear and pressure had been defeated.

West Bengal opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari also celebrated the victory and said voters had exercised their democratic rights freely. He described the outcome as only the beginning of a larger political movement in the state.

The repoll was conducted under tight security after complaints emerged during the April 29 polling process. Allegations included suspicious liquid being sprayed on EVMs and reports of ink related irregularities. Following these complaints, the Election Commission ordered fresh polling across all 285 booths on May 21.

Interestingly, the TMC candidate had announced his withdrawal from the contest two days before polling. However, as the nomination withdrawal deadline had already passed, his name continued to remain on the EVM list during the election process.
