The Central Bureau of Investigation has officially stepped into the NEET UG 2026 controversy by registering a criminal case over allegations of question paper leakage and examination irregularities. The move comes after mounting pressure and growing concern among students and parents across the country.
According to officials, the case was registered following a written complaint submitted by the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education. The investigation agency stated that multiple charges have been included in the FIR, including criminal conspiracy, cheating, breach of trust, theft, destruction of evidence and violations under the Public Examination Prevention of Unfair Means Act 2024.
The CBI confirmed that dedicated investigation teams have already been sent to different regions to collect evidence and identify the individuals or organisations involved in the alleged malpractice. Officials said the inquiry would examine the full scale of the irregularities connected to the NEET UG examination process.
The National Testing Agency also addressed the controversy during a press conference in New Delhi. Abhishek Singh announced that students who paid examination fees for NEET UG 2026 would receive refunds following the cancellation of the test.
He further clarified that a fresh examination would be conducted for candidates and no additional charges would be collected for the re exam. According to the NTA, protecting the credibility and transparency of the examination process remains the top priority.
Abhishek Singh stated that whenever doubts arise regarding the fairness of a national examination, cancelling the test becomes necessary to maintain trust among students and institutions. His remarks came amid widespread anger over repeated examination controversies in recent years.
The NEET UG 2026 examination was originally conducted by the National Testing Agency on the third of this month. However, allegations surrounding the paper leak rapidly escalated, forcing authorities to cancel the exam and initiate a nationwide investigation.
The incident has once again triggered debate about examination security and accountability in large scale competitive tests, especially those involving lakhs of students preparing for medical admissions across India.
