Pakistan witnessed another grim episode of violence as a suicide bombing near a mosque in the capital city left scores of people dead and injured, sending shockwaves across the country and triggering emergency responses.
The attack took place in the Shehzad Town area of Islamabad, near the Tarli Imambargah mosque, shortly after Friday prayers. According to local reports, a suicide bomber detonated explosives at the main entrance of the mosque when worshippers were dispersing.
Security personnel stationed at the gate reportedly noticed the attacker and managed to stop him from entering the main prayer hall. Officials said this timely intervention prevented an even larger tragedy, as hundreds of devotees were gathered inside at the time.
Despite the effort, the explosion proved devastating. At least sixty nine people were killed and more than one hundred sixty nine others sustained injuries. Several of the injured are said to be in critical condition, raising fears that the death toll could increase further.
The powerful blast damaged nearby buildings, shattered windows and scattered debris across surrounding roads. Videos from the scene showed extensive destruction, prompting authorities to declare an emergency across Islamabad. Police and rescue teams rushed to the site, while the injured were shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment.
Reacting to the incident, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep shock and strongly condemned the attack. He conveyed condolences to the families of the victims and assured that those responsible would be brought to justice.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the bombing. The attack comes amid heightened security concerns in Pakistan following recent militant activity, including attacks on security forces in Balochistan. Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to uncover the network behind the assault and prevent further violence.
