Uttarakhand is mourning the loss of veteran leader Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, who passed away on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was 91 years old and breathed his last while undergoing treatment at a hospital, bringing an end to a long political and public life dedicated to service.

Khanduri remained one of the most respected faces in Uttarakhand politics and played an important role in shaping the state’s political journey. As a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, he served as Chief Minister twice and earned recognition for his disciplined leadership style and administrative approach.

His political journey also reflected accountability and responsibility. In 2009, after the party faced setbacks in parliamentary elections within the state, Khanduri stepped down from the Chief Minister’s post accepting moral responsibility. He later returned to lead the state once again in 2011.

Before entering active politics, Khanduri had an accomplished career in the Indian Army and retired with the rank of Major General. He also served at the national level as a Union Minister, adding to his wide range of public service experience.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over his passing and remembered Khanduri as a dedicated leader who served both the nation and Uttarakhand with commitment. He praised his contributions in military and political life and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
