A tragic train collision near Indonesia capital Jakarta has left at least 14 people dead and 84 others injured, according to officials from the state railway operator. The accident, which occurred late Monday night in Bekasi, has raised fresh concerns over railway safety and infrastructure conditions.

Rescue teams worked through the night, cutting through twisted metal compartments to pull out survivors trapped inside the wreckage. Emergency workers used heavy equipment to separate the coaches and reach those buried under debris, managing to save several lives during the intense operation.

Authorities said the sequence of events began when a passenger train struck a vehicle on the tracks. Moments later, a long distance train collided head on with the same train, leading to severe damage. A women only coach suffered the worst impact, and officials confirmed that all fatalities reported so far were women traveling in that compartment.

Scenes at the site turned emotional on Tuesday as families arrived searching for their loved ones among the victims. Police assisted relatives in identifying bodies while medical teams continued treating the injured at nearby hospitals.

Indonesia President Prabowo Subianto expressed deep sorrow over the incident and assured that a detailed investigation would be carried out. He pointed to poor maintenance across parts of the railway network as a possible factor and stressed the need for urgent improvements.

The National Transportation Safety Committee has launched a probe into the accident to determine the exact cause. Meanwhile, the government is also considering infrastructure upgrades, including the construction of a flyover near railway tracks to reduce traffic risks and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
