IRGC Power Explains Why Iran Remains Defiant Even After Khamenei Death

Iran powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps continues to shape the country military strategy politics and economy explaining why Iran maintains its strong stance despite leadership changes.

  • IRGC plays major role in Iran military and politics.
  • IRGC operates directly under Iran supreme leader authority.
  • IRGC power influences Iran strategy and regional actions.

The continued assertive stance of Iran even after the reported death of its supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has drawn global attention. Analysts say the answer largely lies in the power and influence of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps known as the IRGC.

Unlike most countries where the national military operates directly under the government, Iran has a unique parallel power structure. The IRGC functions alongside the regular armed forces but holds immense influence in military operations politics and even economic affairs.

The organization was established after the 1979 Islamic Revolution by Iran first supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. At the time there were concerns that the conventional army might remain loyal to the former monarch Shah of Iran. To safeguard the revolutionary system Khomeini created a force that would remain loyal only to the Islamic revolution and the supreme leader.

Over the decades the IRGC has grown into one of the most powerful institutions in the country. It is directly accountable only to the supreme leader and does not operate under the authority of the president or the government administration.

The IRGC has its own army navy and air force divisions making it a complete military force within the country. Two of its most significant branches are the Quds Force and the Basij militia.

The Quds Force handles Iran overseas operations and strategic influence in other regions. It has been linked to activities in countries such as Lebanon Syria Iraq and Yemen and plays a role in supporting groups aligned with Iran interests.

Within Iran the Basij militia is responsible for maintaining internal order and suppressing activities that are seen as threats to the Islamic revolutionary system.

Another major source of IRGC strength is its economic influence. Despite international sanctions on Iran the organization has built a vast business network across sectors such as oil gas construction telecommunications and banking.

The revenue generated from these economic activities is believed to support military programs and strategic operations abroad. The IRGC also plays a central role in Iran missile systems and nuclear program oversight.

Even though the group has recently faced pressure due to geopolitical tensions with the United States and Israel and the loss of several key commanders in attacks the IRGC continues to remain a crucial pillar of Iran power structure.

For Iran the Revolutionary Guards represent more than just a military organization. They are a political economic and ideological force that continues to shape the country policies and influence its role in the Middle East.
