A long pending issue affecting thousands of teachers in Telangana is now moving toward resolution, with the education department stepping up efforts to streamline promotions. Officials are working on removing key hurdles that have delayed career advancement for in service teachers across the state.
At the center of the issue is the Teacher Eligibility Test TET, which has now become mandatory for promotions. Many teachers have been unable to move up in their careers due to not qualifying in this exam, despite years of service. The latest developments signal a shift aimed at giving these teachers another opportunity.
The state government under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is considering conducting two special TET exams before December this year. Proposals have reportedly been sent for approval, reflecting the urgency to address the growing backlog of eligible teachers awaiting promotions.
The situation changed significantly after a recent Supreme Court ruling in 2025, which made it compulsory for all teachers seeking promotions to pass TET. Earlier, there was an expectation that teachers appointed before 2011 might be exempt, but the ruling removed that possibility entirely.
According to the new guidelines, teachers who fail to qualify in TET by March 31, 2027 will not be eligible for promotions. This has created pressure among educators, especially those who have not yet cleared the exam.
Across Telangana, there are about 1.02 lakh teachers currently working in government schools. Out of them, nearly 57 thousand have not yet qualified in TET. While around 30 thousand teachers cleared the exam in previous attempts, approximately 27 thousand are still required to pass.
Officials believe the upcoming TET notification may help some candidates, but the proposed additional exams later this year will play a crucial role in ensuring that the remaining teachers get a fair chance. The move is expected to ease long standing concerns and bring clarity to the promotion process in the education system.
