31 Sewerage treatment plants to be operational in Hyderabad next year: Municipal Minister KTR

Hyderabad, Nov 29 : Telangana Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, K T Rama Rao (KTR) on Tuesday informed that the Hyderabad city to have 31 Sewerage treatment plants (STPs) next year and in a position to achieve 100 per cent treatment of sewage generated in the city.
The 1,258 MLD capacity plants are being taken up with an outlay of Rs 3,866 crore, Mr KTR said in its keynote address at `Replant Initiative’ by Times of India here.The STPs would handle the secondary treatment, he said the State government would mandate the use of such treated water in construction, landscaping, and cooling the furnaces of thermal plants. A large-scale migration from the rural areas, he said the urban infrastructure has to be strengthened on a regular basis due to the high population density.Hyderabad has been ranked as the number one city in India in the liveability index for several years in a row. However, the State government will not rest and continue to work to make it part of the top global cities, he said.The State government has taken up a hydrological mapping in Hyderabad as part of its efforts to save water resources;,the Minister said it is also implementing the Strategic Nala Development Programme to address various issues.Currently.
, the Hyderabad city is generating about 6,000 tonne waste per day, he said the State has already set up a 20 MW municipal waste- to-power facility at Jawahar Nagar and there are also plans for a further addition of another 20 MW.
The dry waste will be used for power generation while the wet waste will be converted into manure, Mr KTR said.
The State also set up ‘fecal sludge treatment plants’ in 61 municipalities and it will be extended to all municipalities next year, he added.
