The Union Government announced the Padma Awards 2026 on the eve of Republic Day, honouring individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the nation through selfless service, talent, and long standing dedication. Among the 131 awardees this year, eleven distinguished personalities from the Telugu states earned national recognition, bringing immense pride to Telugu society.
In recent years, the Padma Awards have increasingly focused on recognising silent contributors who worked away from the spotlight. The 2026 list strongly reflects this shift, celebrating individuals who transformed lives at the grassroots while also honouring excellence in science, medicine, culture, and the arts.
Posthumous recognition was given to Rama Reddy Mamidi for his pioneering role in strengthening the dairy and cooperative movement. By empowering women led cooperatives, he created sustainable livelihoods for thousands, leaving behind a lasting social impact. Another posthumous honour went to Garimella Balakrishna Prasad, whose devotion to Annamacharya compositions helped preserve and popularise classical devotional music among the masses.
Scientific excellence from the Telugu states stood out with the selection of Dr Kumarasamy Thangaraj, a senior CCMB scientist whose path breaking research in genetics earned global acclaim. His work contributed significantly to understanding population genetics and human evolution.
In the medical field, Padma honours were conferred on Dr Guduru Venkata Rao and Dr Palkonda Vijay Anand Reddy for their tireless service and innovations that improved healthcare access and outcomes. Their contributions reflect years of commitment to saving lives and advancing medical practice.
Cultural contributions also found strong representation. Kuchipudi exponent Deepika Reddy was recognised for taking Indian classical dance to international platforms, while veteran actor and producer Maganti Murali Mohan received the Padma Shri for decades of service to Telugu cinema. Senior actor Rajendra Prasad was honoured for his versatility and enduring influence in Indian films.
Literature and education were acknowledged through the selection of Vempati Family Shastri, while scientists Chandramouli Gaddamanugu and Krishnamurthy Balasubramanian were recognised for their impactful research and academic contributions.
The Padma Awards 2026 once again reaffirmed that true national pride lies not only in fame but in consistent service, creativity, and commitment to society. For the Telugu states, the recognition of eleven achievers stands as a reminder that meaningful work, whether visible or unseen, ultimately earns the nation’s highest respect.
