Vijayawada residents have received encouraging news as the long awaited bypass road project moves closer to completion. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced that the major stretch will be fully ready by March 31 this year.
The six lane Vijayawada Bypass connects Gollapudi to Chinnakakani and is being developed with a total investment of more than Rs 1194 crore. The project includes major bridges across the Krishna River and is designed to divert heavy traffic away from the city limits.
Replying to a question raised in Parliament Gadkari explained that approvals for the bypass were granted in 2019. Out of the total 17.6 kilometre length more than 13 kilometres of work has already been completed. The remaining portion is scheduled to be finished within the March deadline.
Part of the western bypass has already been opened for vehicle movement. From the Sankranti season one side of the road has been operational allowing smoother travel between Guntur and Krishna districts. Officials confirmed that the second carriageway will also be opened by the end of March.
Once fully functional the bypass will allow vehicles from Chennai and Guntur directions to directly reach Eluru and Hyderabad without entering Vijayawada city. This is expected to significantly reduce congestion at major junctions including Gollapudi and surrounding areas.
National Highways Authority officials stated that toll collection will begin only after the entire bypass becomes operational. Until then traffic diversions will continue at select locations where construction is still underway.
With the final phase nearing completion the project is expected to bring lasting traffic relief and faster interstate connectivity for Vijayawada and nearby regions.
