Ballari NMDC Iron Ore Smuggling Probe Ordered by Government Seizure of 2500 Tonnes Sparks Major Investigation
The Karnataka government has ordered a detailed probe into alleged illegal transportation of NMDC iron ore in Ballari after police seized thousands of tonnes and detained suspects.

Karnataka, Ballari: A large scale investigation has been launched in Ballari after allegations surfaced that iron ore belonging to NMDC was being transported illegally from mining areas. The state government has stepped in, ordering officials to submit a detailed report within a week.
Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre directed the Additional Chief Secretary and senior forest department officers to examine whether ore was moved through forest land in violation of rules. A three member committee led by a senior forest official has been formed to conduct the inquiry and study every aspect of the suspected smuggling.
The issue gained attention after police intercepted suspicious movement of mineral loads and began questioning drivers. Based on information provided during the probe, authorities seized nearly 2500 tonnes of iron ore. Officials say the quantity points to organised and repeated illegal transport rather than an isolated incident.
Ballari Superintendent of Police Dr Suman D Pennekar stated that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found involved. He confirmed that a case has been registered under mining and criminal laws and that investigations are continuing at multiple locations. Two tipper lorries and suspects have already been taken into custody for questioning.
During interrogation, one accused driver allegedly admitted that ore was moved from the NMDC C Block through unauthorised routes and supplied to private factories in neighbouring areas. Following these disclosures, police recovered more than 1000 metric tonnes from one plant and over 1400 metric tonnes from another industrial unit.
Officials are now collecting documents from companies, verifying transport records and using GPS tracking to trace routes. Authorities insist the probe will be transparent and impartial.
The incident has raised serious concerns about monitoring of mineral resources in the region. For locals, the crackdown offers hope that stricter enforcement will protect public wealth and prevent further misuse of government owned ore.
