Justice Arrived Too Late as Jahnavi Kandula Father Dies Days Before Seattle Compensation Decision

In a heartbreaking turn, the father who fought for justice in the Jahnavi Kandula case passed away just days before Seattle approved a massive compensation, deepening the grief of a family already shattered by loss.

  • Jahnavi Kandula father dies before compensation announcement.
  • Seattle approves multi million dollar settlement.
  • Family mourns double tragedy amid justice battle.

An accident thousands of miles away has left one family in Andhra Pradesh broken twice over. Just two days before authorities in Seattle agreed to pay compensation in the case of Telugu student Jahnavi Kandula, her father Kandula Srikanth died of a sudden heart attack, never knowing that the justice he fought for had finally arrived.

Jahnavi death in the United States had already devastated her family. Srikanth, a head constable from Kurnool district, stood firm through the legal struggle, driven by one hope that his daughter death would not be ignored. That hope kept him going, relatives say, even as grief took a heavy toll on his health.

According to the family, Srikanth had been emotionally shattered after Jahnavi passing. He stayed away from duty for months before recently reporting to a new posting in Guntakal. Tragedy struck while he was travelling from the railway station when he suffered a massive heart attack in an auto. Despite immediate efforts, his life could not be saved.

What makes the loss even more painful is the timing. Seattle city authorities had finalized a settlement of twenty nine million dollars, roughly two hundred sixty two crore rupees, for Jahnavi family. The announcement came just days after Srikanth death. Family members say he passed away without ever knowing that the long legal battle had reached its conclusion.

Jahnavi had gone to the US in 2021 to pursue higher studies at Northeastern University. On a January night in 2023, she was fatally hit by a speeding police patrol vehicle while crossing the road. Investigations revealed that officer Kevin Dave was driving at nearly three times the permitted speed.

Public outrage intensified after body camera footage surfaced, capturing insensitive remarks made by another officer, Daniel Auderer, about Jahnavi death. The comments sparked international condemnation and added pressure on authorities to act.

Announcing the settlement, Seattle City Attorney Erica Evans said Jahnavi life mattered and expressed hope that the compensation would offer some measure of relief to the grieving family.

For Jahnavi family, however, the pain has only deepened. What began as a fight for justice after a young woman life was cut short has now turned into a story of unbearable loss, with a father leaving this world just before seeing the outcome of his struggle.
