NDA finalizes seat sharing for Tamil Nadu elections
The National Democratic Alliance has officially announced its seat sharing arrangement for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. According to the agreement AIADMK will contest the majority of constituencies while BJP and other alliance partners will field candidates in selected seats.
Under the arrangement AIADMK will contest 178 seats in the 234 member Tamil Nadu Assembly. The BJP will contest 27 seats while Pattali Makkal Katchi will field candidates in 18 constituencies. Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam has been allotted 11 seats.
The announcement was made after senior leaders from alliance parties met in Chennai and finalized the electoral strategy.
Leaders meet in Chennai to finalize alliance plan
The seat sharing agreement was signed at the AIADMK headquarters in Chennai. Several senior leaders attended the meeting including AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami and Union Minister Piyush Goyal.
Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran also participated in the discussions along with PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss and AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran. The leaders discussed campaign plans and alliance coordination ahead of the elections.
Speaking after the agreement Piyush Goyal expressed confidence that the alliance would perform strongly in the elections. He said the parties in the alliance are working together like one family and are determined to secure a major victory in the state.
Tamil Nadu to vote in single phase
The Election Commission has scheduled the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections to be conducted in a single phase on April 23. Counting of votes will take place on May 4.
According to official data the state has about 5.67 crore registered voters. Among them around 2.77 crore are men and about 2.89 crore are women. The voter list also includes more than seven thousand transgender voters.
The term of the current Tamil Nadu Assembly is set to end on May 10 2026.
Political contest expected to be intense
Tamil Nadu politics has traditionally been dominated by two major parties DMK and AIADMK for several decades. The state has rarely seen national parties like BJP or Congress forming a government independently.
In the previous Assembly elections held in 2021 the DMK led by Chief Minister MK Stalin returned to power by winning 133 seats. Congress which contested as an ally of DMK secured 18 seats.
AIADMK which had ruled the state for ten years managed to win 66 seats in that election while the BJP won only four seats as part of the alliance.
The upcoming election is expected to be more competitive as new alliances and political developments have changed the electoral landscape in the state.
