UPI Payments Without Internet or Smartphone Now Possible in India
UPI payments are no longer limited to smartphones and internet connections. New solutions introduced by NPCI now allow users to make secure digital payments even using basic phones without internet.

Many people believe that UPI payments require a smartphone and an internet connection. However, that is no longer completely true. The National Payments Corporation of India has introduced multiple solutions that allow users to make UPI payments even without internet access or a smartphone.
This initiative is especially helpful for people living in rural areas where internet connectivity is often unreliable. With these new options, users can complete transactions within seconds using simple phones and basic calling features.
UPI Growth in Digital Banking
Since the launch of UPI in India, digital banking transactions have become much faster and more convenient. People can now transfer money, check balances, and receive payments instantly without visiting a bank branch.
Government statistics show that UPI transactions are increasing every year and continue to reach record levels. The ease of transferring money in just a few seconds has made UPI one of the most widely used payment systems in the country.
In addition to traditional banking apps, many financial institutions and fintech companies are also launching new UPI applications. These apps provide more digital payment options and improve access to online banking services.
UPI Payments Through Missed Call and IVR
Users can make UPI payments by dialing specific IVR numbers such as 08045163666, 08045163581, or 6366200200. After calling the IVR service, the user needs to follow the instructions and choose the transaction option.
The system will guide the user through the payment process. After confirming the payment request, the user must enter the amount and verify the transaction using the UPI PIN. Once the PIN is entered, the money will be transferred instantly.
Another option is making payments using a missed call service provided by certain merchants. After giving a missed call to the merchant number, the user will receive an automated IVR call to confirm the payment details before completing the transaction.
Special Digital App for Feature Phones
A special digital payment solution has also been developed for feature phone users. This system was created through collaboration between Gupshup, Airtel Payments Bank, JioPay, and Jio Payments Bank.
Users can install the application and register their phone number to start using the service. After selecting their bank account, they must verify their identity through an OTP and create a UPI ID. Once a secure PIN is set, they can begin making payments easily.
Another innovative method allows transactions using audio signals between the merchant device and the customer phone. This technology enables digital payments even without internet connectivity, making UPI more accessible to millions of users across the country.
