A family in Andhra Pradesh was hospitalised after unknowingly consuming a toxic plant dish that was reportedly prepared after watching an Instagram reel.
The incident took place in Yerrampalem village of Gandepalli mandal in Kakinada district. The family had travelled from Hyderabad to their native village to attend a local temple event and were spending time with relatives.
On Monday afternoon, a homemade curry was prepared using Datura leaves along with dal, after seeing a recipe on social media. Soon after consuming the meal, three members of the family began experiencing symptoms of intoxication and discomfort within a few hours.
As their condition worsened, they were rushed to a nearby government hospital in Peddapuram and later shifted to Kakinada Government General Hospital for further treatment. Doctors confirmed that the illness was caused by the consumption of Datura leaves, which are known to be toxic.
Fortunately, the affected individuals are now recovering after receiving medical care. Other family members who did not consume the dish remained safe, avoiding the health risk.
Officials noted that no police case was registered as no formal complaint was filed. The incident serves as a reminder about the dangers of blindly following online content, especially when it involves food or unfamiliar ingredients.
