The Andhra Pradesh government is preparing to introduce a major reform in the vehicle registration process aimed at reducing delays for new vehicle owners across the state. Under the proposed system, permanent registration approvals for newly purchased vehicles could be completed within 24 hours.

The initiative is being taken under the leadership of N. Chandrababu Naidu as part of efforts to improve public services and reduce pending applications in the transport department.

Officials revealed that nearly 27,000 vehicle registrations are currently pending in Andhra Pradesh, mainly due to the absence of a strict timeline for approval. The government believes the new system will help speed up the process and reduce inconvenience for vehicle buyers.

At present, dealers issue temporary registrations after the purchase of a vehicle, while transport department officials later complete the permanent registration process. In many cases, applicants reportedly wait several days for final approval.

Following discussions with transport officials, the Chief Minister instructed authorities to ensure there are no unnecessary delays after the purchase of new vehicles. Transport department officials have already submitted proposals related to the revised system and are awaiting government approval.

According to officials, the new policy may come into force within the next few weeks once formal approval is granted. Authorities expect the process to become operational soon after the state government clears the proposal.

Under the proposed model, transport officials will have to verify and approve online registration applications within 24 hours, except in cases where applicants request fancy registration numbers. If officials fail to process the application within the fixed deadline, the system may automatically approve the registration after the 24 hour period.

Sources in the transport department said officers would also be able to provide approvals online even during holidays to avoid backlogs and improve efficiency.

The government had reportedly examined the possibility of giving permanent registration powers directly to vehicle dealers along with temporary registration authority. However, officials advised that the final registration powers should remain with the transport department to avoid possible legal complications.

Authorities believe the revised system will make vehicle registration faster, more transparent and more convenient for the public in the coming days.
