A devastating explosion in northeastern Myanmar has claimed the lives of more than 55 people and left over 70 others injured, making it one of the deadliest industrial accidents reported in the region in recent times. The blast occurred on Sunday in Kaungtup village, located in Namhkam Township of Shan State, close to the Chinese border.

According to local reports, the explosion took place inside a building where explosive materials used for mining and quarry operations were being stored. The force of the blast was so intense that it sent thick smoke across the area and damaged more than a hundred nearby homes.

Rescue teams, volunteers, and emergency workers rushed to the scene soon after the incident and launched extensive search operations. By Sunday evening, dozens of bodies had been recovered from the rubble, including several children. Injured victims were shifted to hospitals in Namhkam Township for treatment, with many reported to be in critical condition.

Authorities fear the death toll could rise further as rescue personnel continue clearing debris and searching for missing people. Medical teams are working around the clock to provide treatment and support to those affected by the tragedy.

The village where the explosion occurred lies just a few kilometers from the China border and is currently under the control of the Taang National Liberation Army, an armed group engaged in conflict with Myanmar’s military government.

Local officials and humanitarian organizations are continuing relief and rehabilitation efforts for affected families. The incident comes at a time when several parts of Myanmar remain unstable following the military takeover in 2021, with ongoing clashes between armed groups and government forces across different regions.
