As part of a large scale public health initiative, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced a statewide distribution of Albendazole tablets to students and children aged between one and nineteen years. The programme will be carried out on February 17 in connection with the 21st National Deworming Day.
Health officials said the drive aims to reach more than 11.2 million beneficiaries across the state. The tablets will be given free of cost to children in anganwadi centres, government and private schools, colleges, and selected community locations to ensure maximum coverage.
The initiative is being jointly implemented by the Health Family Welfare Department along with the Women and Child Welfare Department and other supporting departments. As per official targets, over 2.3 million children in the one to five age group will be covered, while the remaining beneficiaries include school and college students.
Authorities explained that intestinal worm infections mainly spread through contaminated soil and can cause serious health issues such as anaemia, stomach pain, poor nutrition and delayed physical growth in children. Regular deworming is considered an effective preventive measure to address these problems.
Albendazole tablets play a key role in controlling such infections and improving overall child health, officials said. The government has completed preparatory measures to ensure smooth execution of the programme and has urged parents and educational institutions to cooperate for its successful implementation.
