In a major administrative reform, the Andhra Pradesh cabinet has approved a proposal to expand the existing zonal system from four zones to six, along with increasing multi zones from two to three.

The decision comes in response to the recent reorganisation of districts, with the government aiming to align administrative divisions more effectively with the new structure. Officials said the move is intended to bring governance closer to the people while improving efficiency in public services.

Under the revised framework, districts have been grouped based on geographical proximity. North coastal districts including Srikakulam Vizianagaram Manyam Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli will form Zone One. The erstwhile Godavari and Krishna regions have been split into separate zones, creating Zones Two and Three with districts such as Alluri East Godavari Kakinada in one group and West Godavari Eluru NTR and Krishna in another.

Further restructuring has been carried out in the southern parts of the state. Nellore and Prakasam districts have been grouped into one zone, while the Rayalaseema region has been divided into two separate zones, forming Zones Five and Six to better manage administration.

The government believes that reducing the size of zones will strengthen the implementation of local reservation rules in government jobs. This is expected to improve employment opportunities for local candidates and ensure fair representation.

Officials also pointed out that the new zonal arrangement will help resolve long standing issues related to employee transfers and promotions by simplifying administrative processes.

Analysts view the decision as a significant step toward decentralisation, stating that the six zone system could improve governance, reduce regional disparities and create a more balanced administrative framework across Andhra Pradesh.
