The political uncertainty in Karnataka appears to be nearing its conclusion, with senior Congress leader and KPCC president DK Shivakumar expected to take oath as the state’s next Chief Minister on June 3. Party sources indicate that preparations are underway for the formal transition of power.
A Congress delegation led by Shivakumar is scheduled to meet Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to discuss the swearing in ceremony and complete the official process required for government formation. The meeting is expected to pave the way for the final announcement of the new administration.
The development comes after former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stepped down from office, triggering intense speculation over the leadership change. With the Congress leadership now moving ahead with the transition, the suspense surrounding the next Chief Minister is expected to end formally in the coming days.
According to party insiders, a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party will be held in Bengaluru, where MLAs are likely to unanimously elect DK Shivakumar as their leader. Leaders within the party describe the exercise as a procedural formality ahead of the swearing in ceremony.
Sources within the Congress say Shivakumar has shown a preference for taking charge on June 3. Reports suggest he consulted his longtime astrologer before finalising the date, reflecting his well known belief in astrology and religious traditions. He is also said to prefer a simple oath taking ceremony rather than a grand public event.
Meanwhile, the Congress high command is actively working on the composition of the new cabinet. Discussions are continuing in Delhi over ministerial berths and portfolio allocations, with efforts focused on maintaining political balance and ensuring representation for key leaders from different groups within the party.
The leadership is also carefully considering social and regional equations while shaping the cabinet. Party strategists believe the final team will be designed to strengthen the government’s stability and accommodate various sections of the Congress organisation.
With the swearing in date expected to be announced soon, Karnataka is preparing for a new phase under DK Shivakumar’s leadership as the Congress seeks to consolidate its position in the state.
