The Krishna River Management Board held a key meeting in Hyderabad and decided to permit Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to utilise Krishna river water based on their drinking water requirements.

Senior officials and Engineers in Chief from both states attended the three member committee meeting conducted by KRMB to review current water availability and reservoir utilisation.

During the discussions, the board approved the use of 10 TMC of water for Andhra Pradesh from Nagarjuna Sagar until August 15. Telangana was permitted to utilise 16 TMC from Nagarjuna Sagar along with an additional 6 TMC from the Srisailam reservoir.

Officials said the allocations were made considering the immediate drinking water needs of both Telugu states during the ongoing summer season.

During the meeting, Telangana officials reportedly informed the board that Andhra Pradesh had already utilised more water than expected from the common reservoirs. They requested KRMB to closely monitor future usage and maintain balance in allocations.

The discussions mainly focused on ensuring that both states receive sufficient water supply for essential public needs without creating disputes over reservoir management.

KRMB officials emphasised the importance of coordination between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in managing Krishna river resources, especially during periods of increased demand and lower water storage levels.

The latest meeting comes amid continuing discussions between the two states regarding water sharing, reservoir operations and long term river management policies.
