Karnataka, Dharwad: A tragic incident was reported from Dharwad Central Jail on Tuesday evening, where a life-term prisoner was found dead within the prison premises. Jail officials suspect suicide, raising serious questions about monitoring inside the high-security facility.
The deceased has been identified as Eshwarappa Pujar, a native of Basapur village in Lakshmeshwar taluk of Gadag district. He was convicted for murdering his wife and had been sentenced to 14 years in prison. Sources said he had already completed more than half of his sentence.
According to prison officials, Pujar allegedly took his life by hanging himself at an ongoing construction area inside the jail campus. A rope used at the construction site is believed to have been used in the act.
Concern arose when Pujar failed to return to his cell even hours after the completion of assigned work. A search operation was launched, following which he was found hanging. He was immediately shifted to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police have registered a case at the suburban police station, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances and motive behind the incident. Officials stated that no clear reason has emerged so far.
Senior prison authorities confirmed that departmental action will be initiated against staff responsible for escorting and monitoring inmates, as prisoners are required to be returned to their cells promptly after work hours. Pujar was reportedly known for good conduct during his time in prison.
