Telangana BJP president N Ramchandra Rao was placed under house arrest on Sunday as police stepped in to avoid possible law and order issues linked to his planned tour of Kamareddy and Banswada.
Authorities acted a day after political tensions flared in the two towns. Rao was expected to visit along with BJP MLAs and MLCs, but police detained him at his residence as a precautionary measure, citing the need to prevent any untoward incidents.
The backdrop to the situation lies in recent municipal elections in Telangana, particularly after the election of the Kamareddy Municipal Chairman. Government adviser and former minister Shabbir Ali alleged that land belonging to a government degree college in Kamareddy had been transferred to another institution.
The allegation sparked sharp reactions from BJP leaders. MLA Venkataramana Reddy, who was present during the discussion, demanded documentary proof from Congress leaders and openly challenged the claims. Heated exchanges followed, with lower level party workers also joining the confrontation.
The controversy deepened when Reddy reportedly contacted NSUI leader Sandeep on Saturday, asking him to present evidence at Saraswati Shishu Mandir. With political tempers running high, police opted for preventive action by restricting Rao’s movement.
