What began as a verbal argument on a Sunday night has ended in tragedy for a family in Kurnool. Manohar, a resident of Kanderi Street in the Old Town police station limits, lost his life after allegedly being attacked with a knife while trying to defuse a violent confrontation.
According to police, the initial dispute broke out near Ambedkar Circle at the old bus stand. Maruti and his cousin Vijay had gone there when they encountered Erukali Ramudu alias Muni. A heated exchange reportedly took place between Ramudu and Vijay, nearly leading to blows. Maruti intervened at that time and took Vijay home, believing the matter had been settled.
However, the tension did not end there. Ramudu later informed his associate Raju about the argument. Soon after, Raju allegedly called Maruti and abused him over the phone. Maruti chose not to escalate the issue and ended the call, suggesting they speak the next morning.
Instead, matters took a dangerous turn. Police say Ramudu, Raju and Nagesh went to Maruti and Vijay’s residence the following day. The trio allegedly assaulted both men outside their house. Hearing the commotion, Manohar, who lived upstairs, rushed down in an attempt to separate the groups and calm the situation.
In the chaos, the attackers allegedly turned on Manohar. He was stabbed in the neck and left bleeding on the spot as the accused fled. Family members and locals shifted the injured men to hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, Manohar succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
The victim was working as a member of a bank recovery group and is survived by his wife and children. His death has triggered anger among local community and caste group leaders, who staged a protest demanding strict punishment for the accused.
Based on a complaint filed by Maruti, police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Authorities conducted a postmortem and handed over the body to the family. Officers say efforts are underway to apprehend the accused and restore calm in the Old Town area of Kurnool.
