Kakatiya University in Warangal has recently witnessed a series of unusual protests by students over food served in the campus common mess. The incidents have drawn attention as the demonstrations were triggered not by academic or infrastructure issues but by disagreements over the daily food menu.
The latest protest erupted when students expected chapati for breakfast according to the scheduled menu but were instead served khichdi. Angry over the change, a group of students carried cooking vessels from the mess and placed them on the road near the university main gate to stage a protest.
The demonstration disrupted the morning routine for many students as the cooking vessels were taken away from the kitchen during the agitation. As a result, several students could not receive their breakfast on time and were left waiting until the situation was resolved.
University officials along with police personnel reached the spot and persuaded the protesting students to calm down. After discussions, the vessels were taken back to the kitchen and the situation gradually returned to normal.
The protest was not an isolated incident. Over the past two weeks, repeated disagreements over food items served in the mess have sparked tensions on campus. Earlier, students had taken to the streets demanding eggs in the mess menu.
On another occasion, a dispute over chicken distribution led to clashes among students. Some alleged that the portions were unevenly served, which resulted in heated arguments and physical fights. Reports said several students were injured during the altercation and police cases were later registered against a few individuals.
These recurring incidents have raised concerns among faculty members and parents who feel that such protests are affecting the reputation of the university, which has a long history of academic excellence.
However, many students have presented a different perspective. They claim that the mess management is not providing nutritious food and allege that some officials are misusing funds meant for student welfare.
Students also alleged that better food is sometimes provided only to those who question the authorities, while others are left with poor quality meals. They have demanded strict action against those responsible for irregularities in the mess system.
As the debate continues, the repeated protests over food have sparked discussions about campus management and student welfare at Kakatiya University, highlighting the need for better coordination between students and administration.
