In a major step aimed at protecting public health the Telangana government has introduced a new digital monitoring system to track unsafe medicines in the market. The Telangana Drugs Control Administration has launched a statewide SMS alert system that will quickly warn pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies about medicines that fail quality standards.

The new system is designed to send instant alerts to medical shops manufacturers and distributors whenever non standard quality medicines are identified. Officials say the move will help stop the sale of such medicines before they reach patients.

Earlier warnings about unsafe medicines were mainly issued through the CDSCO website or monthly circulars. This often caused delays of around fifteen to twenty days before pharmacies became aware of the issue. With the new SMS based system alerts will be delivered immediately through mobile messages email or mobile applications.

The alert network will cover a large section of the pharmaceutical supply chain. Around forty eight thousand medical shops along with more than seven hundred sixty manufacturers and wholesale distributors across the state will receive the notifications at the same time.

Officials from the Drug Control Administration said that once an alert is received the sale of the identified medicine must be stopped immediately. Strict legal action will be taken if anyone continues to sell medicines even after receiving a freeze order.

Health experts have welcomed the initiative stating that real time alerts will help prevent poor quality medicines from reaching patients. They believe the system will significantly improve drug safety monitoring in the state.

At present the Drug Control Administration operates only one testing laboratory which examines around five to six thousand drug samples each year. However authorities plan to increase testing capacity to twelve thousand samples annually.

Proposals have also been submitted to establish additional laboratories in Warangal Nizamabad Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda along with recruiting more inspectors. These steps are expected to further strengthen the system and improve medicine safety across Telangana.
