The Mallanna Bonalu festival in Peddapur village of Jagityal district was celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm as thousands of devotees gathered to offer prayers to Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy. The annual event drew people not only from Telangana but also from several neighboring states.
The temple premises and surrounding areas were filled with devotees from early morning as people arrived carrying traditional bonams to offer to the deity. Devotees believe that Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy fulfills their wishes and protects their families.
Peddapur in Metpalli mandal hosts the Bonalu festival every year on the first Sunday after the Kamudi Pournami. For nearly twenty nine years villagers have followed strict religious practices on Sundays by avoiding non vegetarian food and alcohol as part of their devotion to Mallanna.
During the festival thousands of women carried bonams containing special offerings such as gudannam and paramannam which were presented to the deity with deep faith. Devotees also fulfilled their vows by offering jaggery tulabharam and by presenting lambs to the temple.
The temple surroundings echoed with devotional energy as traditional performers including Oggu artists and Shiva devotees entertained the crowd with rhythmic drum beats and cultural displays. Many devotees observed fasting and performed special rituals before seeking blessings of the deity.
In the evening the most striking moment of the festival was witnessed when more than fifty thousand bonams were carried in a grand procession around the temple. The sight of thousands of women carrying bonams at the same time created a remarkable spiritual atmosphere.
The celebrations concluded with the Rathotsavam of Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy. Before the chariot procession Poturaju performances captivated the devotees and added vibrant energy to the festival. The Mallanna Bonalu festival once again turned Peddapur into a sea of devotees celebrating faith and tradition.
