The Telangana government is preparing a major welfare initiative aimed at supporting girl students pursuing higher education across the state. Under this proposed plan, free electric scooters may soon be provided to girl students studying in government colleges.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has introduced the idea as part of efforts to improve access to higher education and make daily travel easier for students. Officials have already started examining the feasibility of the program and working out the details for its implementation.
According to preliminary estimates, nearly 1.7 lakh girl students across Telangana could benefit from the scheme. The government is identifying eligible students from government degree colleges, social welfare women’s degree colleges, tribal welfare colleges, and government engineering institutions.
Financial planning for the initiative is also underway. The state finance department estimates that around Rs 1600 crore may be required to implement the program. The government is likely to allocate funds for the scheme in the upcoming state budget and distribute the scooters in phases.
Authorities are also studying various electric scooter models currently available in the market. While basic electric scooters start at around Rs 60000, officials are reportedly considering reliable branded models that offer better safety and durability. Many well known electric scooters are priced between Rs 1.10 lakh and Rs 1.50 lakh.
The procurement process is expected to include strict tender guidelines. Companies supplying the scooters may be required to provide battery warranty and at least three years of service support to ensure long term reliability for the students.
The government has chosen electric vehicles not only to ease the financial burden of daily petrol expenses but also to promote environmentally friendly transportation. Officials believe the scheme will help students travel comfortably to their colleges, especially those coming from distant areas.
Transportation challenges in rural regions often force many young women to discontinue their education midway. By providing free electric scooters, the government hopes to reduce dropout rates and encourage more girls to continue higher education.
If implemented successfully, the initiative could significantly improve college accessibility for girl students while also promoting sustainable transport across Telangana.
