The Telangana government is preparing to transform the Musi River through a large scale urban development initiative known as the Hyderabad Musi River Mega Project. The plan is designed to improve the river environment and turn the surrounding areas into vibrant public spaces.
Officials confirmed that the detailed project report for the first phase has already been completed. The government is now moving forward with preparations to begin construction activities soon.
In the first phase the Hyderabad Musi River Mega Project will focus on developing nearly twenty one kilometers of the river stretch. The project is estimated to cost around seven thousand crore rupees and aims to bring major changes to the riverfront areas of Hyderabad.
Authorities are planning to create green parks flower gardens and recreational spaces along the river. Facilities such as walking tracks cycling paths playgrounds and public gathering areas will be built to provide relaxation and entertainment for residents.
The development plan also includes commercial zones tourism attractions and public infrastructure that could transform the Musi River corridor into a major urban destination. Officials believe the project will significantly improve the appearance and environmental quality of the river area.
Flood protection is another key part of the Hyderabad Musi River Mega Project. Engineers are designing strong protective walls on both sides of the river to ensure the city remains safe even during heavy floods similar to those that affected Hyderabad in 1908.
The structures are being planned to withstand extremely high flood flows. These safety measures are intended to reduce the risk of damage to surrounding neighborhoods during extreme rainfall events.
To prevent sewage from entering the river the project will include large trunk pipeline systems connected to sewage treatment plants. New treatment facilities will process wastewater in multiple stages before reusing it for construction industries and green landscaping.
Infrastructure improvements are also part of the plan. Around fifteen new bridges will be constructed across the Musi and Esa rivers to improve connectivity between areas such as Manchirevula Narsingi and Sun City.
Wide roads will also be developed along both sides of the river to support better transportation and reduce traffic congestion in nearby localities.
The project also includes a unique underground sewage treatment facility inspired by international urban river restoration projects. Above this facility public parks water features and sports areas will be created for citizens.
Another major attraction planned under the Hyderabad Musi River Mega Project is the development of Gandhi Sarovar near Bapu Ghat. Authorities are planning to build a one hundred meter tall tower featuring one of the tallest statues of Mahatma Gandhi along with a museum dedicated to his life and legacy.
Overall a comprehensive master plan covering more than one hundred ten square kilometers along the Musi River is being prepared. Officials believe the Hyderabad Musi River Mega Project will transform the river from a neglected waterway into a major tourism and economic hub for the city.
