Warangal, March 18: A tragic incident at Kakatiya University has sparked serious concerns over student safety, after a postgraduate student lost her life following a suicide attempt, with conflicting claims emerging over the reasons behind her death.
The student, identified as Srividya, was pursuing second year Integrated MSc Chemistry and was staying at the Padmakshi Women’s Hostel on campus. Originally from Khammam district, she had reportedly been involved in a dispute with fellow students earlier this month over missing valuables, including a laptop and gold items.
According to university officials, the matter was treated as a theft complaint and was taken to the police station, where students were counselled and sent back. However, the student’s family has alleged a far more disturbing sequence of events, claiming that she was harassed, confined in a room, and physically assaulted by seniors.
Distressed by the situation, Srividya left the campus with her family. Within hours of reaching home, she reportedly consumed poison in a suicide attempt. She was first rushed to a local hospital and later shifted to a major hospital in Hyderabad for advanced treatment.
For nearly two weeks, she battled for her life before succumbing, leaving her family devastated. Her parents have strongly alleged that ragging and humiliation pushed her to take the extreme step, and claim she had given a statement indicating harassment by fellow students.
The incident has triggered protests on the university campus, with student groups demanding strict action against those responsible. Demonstrations were held in front of the administrative office, with calls for accountability and better protection mechanisms for students.
As the case gains attention, questions remain unanswered. While officials maintain that the issue was limited to a theft-related dispute, the family’s allegations of ragging and assault have intensified demands for a thorough and transparent investigation.
Police are currently looking into all aspects of the case to determine the exact sequence of events and establish the truth behind the student’s death.
