A midnight road accident near Devanahalli claimed the lives of three women traveling to the airport for a Kashi pilgrimage while several others were injured after a lorry crashed.

Bengaluru: A tragic midnight road accident near Devanahalli on the outskirts of Bengaluru claimed the lives of three women who were on their way to the airport for a pilgrimage trip to Kashi. The incident occurred when a lorry collided with a passenger vehicle carrying a group of travelers.

According to police officials the accident took place near Rani Cross when the vehicle carrying the passengers attempted to move from the highway toward a service road. During this maneuver a speeding lorry crashed into the vehicle causing severe damage.

The impact of the collision was extremely strong and the left side of the vehicle was badly crushed. Three women who were seated on the single seats in that section died on the spot due to the severity of the crash.

The deceased have been identified as Jayamma aged sixty Yashodamma aged sixty and Ganga aged thirty eight. In addition to the fatalities eight other passengers including the driver of the vehicle sustained injuries in the accident.

The injured were immediately taken to a private hospital in Devanahalli for treatment. One of the victims identified as Kempamma suffered serious injuries and was later shifted to a hospital in Bengaluru for advanced medical care.

The group had planned a fifteen day pilgrimage to Kashi and had booked early morning flight tickets scheduled at six in the morning. The travelers all belonged to the same area and had arranged the trip through a women self help group savings scheme.

The group had started their journey from Tiptur around ten at night in a passenger vehicle heading toward Kempegowda International Airport. Reports suggest that the driver was using navigation on Google Maps as he was unfamiliar with the exact route to the airport terminal.

Investigators believe the driver may have missed an earlier service road turning and moved ahead before attempting to take a U turn at the next point. At that moment the lorry traveling nearby collided with the vehicle leading to the fatal accident.

Traffic police officials stated that overspeeding may have been a major factor behind the severity of the crash. After the collision the lorry driver reportedly abandoned the vehicle at the scene and fled.

Authorities have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident to determine the exact sequence of events and identify the driver responsible for the accident.
