Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured that the safety of Indians living in Gulf countries remains the government’s top priority as tensions continue to rise in West Asia. Addressing the Lok Sabha, he spoke about the ongoing conflict and its wider implications.
He noted that the situation in West Asia has become increasingly concerning over the past few weeks, with military tensions escalating between major powers. The Prime Minister emphasized the need for restraint and diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.
Highlighting the human impact of the crisis, he said the government has extended all possible support to Indian citizens in affected regions. So far, more than three lakh Indians have been brought back safely, including over one thousand evacuated from Iran.
The Prime Minister also underlined the importance of a united voice from Parliament, stating that India must send a clear message to the world calling for a peaceful and swift resolution to the conflict.
Focusing on economic concerns, he warned that the ongoing conflict is affecting the global economy, particularly due to disruptions in energy supplies. A significant portion of crude oil and gas imports comes from the Middle East, making the situation critical for India.
He pointed out that the Strait of Hormuz plays a crucial role in transporting oil, gas and fertilizers, and any disruption in this route could have serious consequences. The government is actively working to ensure uninterrupted supplies and avoid inconvenience to citizens.
India currently maintains strategic petroleum reserves of about 53 lakh metric tonnes and imports energy from 41 countries. The Prime Minister said that diversifying import sources has helped strengthen energy security during global uncertainty.
He also mentioned that India meets around 60 percent of its LPG requirements through imports, and efforts are being made to boost domestic production to maintain stability.
The Prime Minister expressed concern over the loss of lives during the conflict and assured that the government stands firmly with affected families. He added that he has personally spoken with leaders of several West Asian countries, who have assured full support and safety for Indian citizens.
With tensions continuing, India is closely monitoring developments while prioritizing the safety of its people and ensuring stability in energy supplies.
