Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police carried out a large scale operation against illegal SIM card activities and arrested 66 individuals accused of supplying ghost SIM cards to cybercriminal networks. The operation was conducted as part of a wider crackdown aimed at disrupting digital fraud activities.
The investigation was carried out under Operation Octopus 3.0 and involved coordinated searches across multiple states. Police teams continued the operation for several days and examined suspected networks believed to be supporting cybercrime activities.
Authorities identified more than a thousand ghost SIM cards during the investigation and seized several active connections. Officials suspect these SIM cards were allegedly used in multiple cyber related offenses reported in different parts of the country.
Police also discovered that several point of sale agents had allegedly assisted in activating and distributing SIM cards through improper methods. Investigators found that in some cases, additional SIM cards were activated without the knowledge of customers who originally applied for connections.
The operation extended across several states including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and other regions as police teams tracked the wider network involved in these activities.
Officials believe illegal SIM card circulation has become a serious concern because such connections are often used in financial fraud, online scams and other cyber related crimes. Investigations are continuing to identify additional links and possible involvement of other individuals.
