Bengaluru may soon witness the demolition of another major flyover as part of the upcoming Orange Line metro project. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited has invited tenders to remove the Dollars Colony flyover in JP Nagar a move that has sparked concern among commuters and nearby residents.
The flyover located at the busy Dollars Colony junction serves as a crucial link for traffic moving between Bannerghatta Road Mysuru Road and surrounding areas of Jayanagar and JP Nagar. Its proposed removal has led to fears of increased congestion especially during peak hours.
According to officials the decision is linked to the construction of the Orange Line metro corridor stretching from JP Nagar Fourth Phase to Kempapura. The nearly one kilometre long flyover which was inaugurated in 2018 at a cost of around Rs 25 crore now stands in the path of the planned metro alignment.
BMRCL is planning a double decker structure combining both metro rail and flyover infrastructure under the Orange Line project. While authorities say this will eventually ease traffic and improve connectivity many commuters worry that the transition period will be difficult.
Residents point out that following the earlier demolition of the Jayadeva flyover the city is already struggling with traffic bottlenecks. They fear a similar situation could unfold again until the metro and double decker flyover construction is completed.
The Orange Line is part of Bengaluru Metro Phase Three and will span 44.65 kilometres across two corridors. While the project is widely seen as essential for the city’s long term mobility locals urge authorities to implement strong traffic management plans to minimise disruption during construction.
