Bengaluru: A sweeping enforcement drive by the Greater Bengaluru Authority has put paying guest accommodations under the scanner, with officials moving against properties that failed to meet basic safety and hygiene norms.
Health officers conducted inspections across several assembly segments including Shantinagar, CV Raman Nagar, Gandhinagar, Shivajinagar, Chamarajpet and Chickpet. During the checks, authorities issued notices to 574 PGs for violations linked to kitchen cleanliness, drinking water quality and safety arrangements.
Eight PGs found to be unsafe were sealed on the spot, while fines totaling 3.09 lakh rupees were imposed for other breaches. Officials said the action follows rising complaints as the number of migrants coming to the city for jobs and education continues to grow, leading to a sharp increase in PG facilities.
Authorities have warned that owners who ignore the notices and fail to correct deficiencies will face tougher action in the coming days. All inspected properties have been given clear timelines to comply.
Reacting to the drive, the PG Owners Association said sudden inspections have caused concern among proprietors, but some owners acknowledged the need for compliance and cooperation. Officials reiterated that safety and basic amenities are non negotiable and further closures are likely if standards are not met.
