Hubballi, Karnataka: Tension briefly surfaced in parts of Hubballi after a controversial WhatsApp status shared by a local youth triggered allegations of hurting religious sentiments. Police stepped in quickly, registering a case on their own and detaining the accused to prevent any escalation.
According to officials, the youth had reportedly uploaded a video originally created by a YouTuber. In the clip, religious chants were recited near a Hindu deity, which many residents felt was disrespectful to Hindu beliefs. The status began circulating widely, drawing strong reactions from the public.
As the video spread across local groups, anger mounted among community members. Complaints started pouring in, prompting the Old Hubballi police to take suo motu action without waiting for a formal petition. Officers said maintaining communal harmony was their immediate priority.
The accused, identified as 27 year old Dadapeer, a resident of Noorani Flats in Hubballi, was picked up during a late night operation. He was later produced before authorities and sent to judicial custody.
Police sources stated that strict action would be taken against any content that disturbs peace or promotes religious disharmony. They also appealed to citizens to avoid sharing sensitive material on social media and to act responsibly online to prevent misunderstandings.
