Karnataka, Bengaluru: The opening day of the Karnataka Legislature joint session turned contentious after Opposition leader R Ashoka launched a sharp attack on the ruling Congress, accusing its MLAs of behaving irresponsibly inside the House.
Reacting to the events, Ashoka said the Governor, Thawar Chand Gehlot, had arrived with a prepared address and fulfilled his constitutional duty by delivering it. However, he alleged that the conduct displayed by Congress legislators during and after the address undermined the dignity of the House.
In a post shared on his social media account, Ashoka described the day as one of the darkest chapters in the history of the Karnataka Legislature. He accused Congress MLAs of acting in a manner unbecoming of elected representatives and showing disrespect to the Constitution, the Governor and legislative traditions.
Ashoka further claimed that by interrupting the Governor’s address, Congress members violated long standing norms and set a dangerous precedent. He expressed particular displeasure over the role of senior leaders, stating that such behaviour from experienced legislators was shameful and unacceptable.
Referring to past instances, Ashoka noted that earlier Governors had also delivered symbolic addresses, but were always accorded respect, including the playing of the national anthem and a formal send off. He alleged that this protocol was ignored on the current occasion, calling it an insult to the Governor’s office and the national anthem.
The Opposition leader also criticised the conduct of certain Legislative Council members, claiming it reflected poorly on the political culture of the Congress. He has written to Assembly Speaker U T Khader, urging strict action against those responsible and warning that such incidents erode the credibility and honour of the Karnataka Legislature.
