Bengaluru, Karnataka: A routine security watch at Kempegowda International Airport turned tense after personnel noticed a massive advertising balloon drifting inside the airport’s highly restricted operational zone, an area where even small airborne objects are strictly prohibited for safety reasons.
According to officials, the balloon carried the name of a private construction company and was seen flying within the core airside region meant exclusively for aircraft movement. Security teams immediately treated it as a potential risk, fearing that any floating object in the flight path could endanger aircraft operations.
The incident took place on January 5, but a formal complaint was filed later by an officer from the aviation security wing of the Central Industrial Security Force. In his statement, the officer said the balloon was operating without authorization and had entered the red zone designated under civil aviation safety rules.
Alert personnel from the airport security and bomb detection teams quickly intervened and stopped the balloon. After inspection, they confirmed that it was being used for advertising purposes and had no clearance to operate anywhere near the airside boundary.
Officials explained that the red zone is classified as a no flying area under national aviation guidelines. Any object such as drones, kites or balloons can disrupt aircraft landing or take off and pose serious threats to passenger safety. Even minor negligence in such areas can lead to major consequences.
Police said the act amounts to a clear violation of aviation regulations. A First Information Report has been registered and further investigation is underway to determine who authorized the balloon and how it entered the prohibited space.
The episode has once again highlighted the challenges faced by airport security teams who constantly monitor the skies as well as the ground. For passengers and staff present that day, the unusual sight of a giant balloon floating near the runway created visible concern before authorities stepped in.
With flight safety considered non negotiable, officials have warned that strict action will be taken against any individual or company responsible for breaching airport security norms.
