A fresh debate unfolded in the Telangana Assembly after Congress MLA Anirudh Reddy proposed setting up a dedicated corporation for Ippa liquor production. He said such a move could strengthen tribal livelihoods while also contributing to the state economy.

Highlighting the cultural importance of the Ippa tree, Anirudh Reddy stated that it has a history spanning thousands of years. He noted that products derived from Ippa flowers have long been used by tribal communities, both for consumption and traditional practices.

The MLA stressed that encouraging Ippa based products could create employment opportunities, especially for tribal populations. He pointed out that in other states, similar forest produce has already become a major source of income with government backing.

Beyond liquor production, he suggested that Ippa flowers can be used to make a range of food products. This, he said, could open new markets and help small businesses grow in rural areas.

Raising health concerns, Anirudh Reddy criticized the consumption of low quality alcohol available in the market. He argued that traditional alternatives like Ippa based products were historically seen as safer in tribal regions.

He urged the government to take a policy decision by forming a corporation that would provide training, infrastructure and market access. According to him, this would benefit both tribal communities and the state’s revenue system.

Anirudh Reddy also called for moving away from outdated restrictions and adopting modern approaches to promote Ippa products. He said Telangana has the potential to turn this traditional resource into a strong economic sector.
