Fino Bank CEO Arrest Sends Shockwaves Through Financial and Gaming Sectors

The arrest of Fino Bank CEO Rishi Gupta has created a stir in India financial and banking circles after investigators linked the bank to a large online gaming tax evasion case. The Directorate General of GST Intelligence Hyderabad detained Gupta following a probe into alleged irregular financial flows through gaming platforms.
Officials said the investigation uncovered an online gaming syndicate involving transactions worth nearly thirteen thousand crore rupees. Of this amount around three thousand crore rupees reportedly moved through Fino Bank channels. Authorities further alleged that the bank failed to pay nearly eight hundred forty crore rupees in GST dues connected to these operations.
According to investigators the gaming platforms used digital payment routes extensively and a significant volume of funds was processed through Fino Bank accounts. Gupta was produced before a court in Hyderabad which ordered fourteen days of judicial remand as the investigation continues.
In response to the developments Fino Payments Bank issued a clarification to stock exchanges stating that the matter is linked to certain business partners and not to the bank core operations. However the bank moved swiftly to manage the leadership vacuum by appointing Chief Financial Officer Ketan Merchant as interim Chief Executive Officer.
The market reaction was immediate. Fino Bank shares dropped nearly seven point five percent reflecting investor concern over regulatory risks and reputational impact. Financial experts say the case has once again highlighted tighter scrutiny on digital payments online gaming and GST compliance in India banking ecosystem.
