Hyderabad Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar has issued a strong warning to city residents about a new form of cyber fraud involving fake water bill messages and malicious mobile applications.

According to officials, cyber criminals are posing as representatives of the Hyderabad water board and sending messages claiming that pending bills will lead to disconnection of water supply. These messages are designed to create panic and force people into quick action.

Once victims respond, fraudsters send a suspicious file named HMWSSB WATER BILL UPDATE.apk and ask them to install it. Authorities have cautioned that downloading such files gives hackers full access to the user’s mobile phone and sensitive data.

Police explained that after installation, the device can be remotely controlled by cyber criminals. They can access calls messages and even one time passwords, allowing them to carry out unauthorized bank transactions without the victim’s knowledge.

Officials said this type of cyber fraud is increasing as criminals take advantage of public fear and trending services. By collecting personal and banking information, they are able to drain accounts within minutes.

Residents have been advised not to trust calls or messages from unknown sources regarding water bill payments. Payments should only be made through official websites or authorized applications.

Police also urged citizens to avoid downloading any APK files from unverified sources. In case of suspicious activity or financial loss, people should immediately report to cyber crime authorities.

Victims can contact the national cyber crime helpline at 1930 or file complaints online through the official cybercrime portal. Authorities stressed that quick reporting can help prevent further financial damage and improve chances of recovery.
