The Telangana government has announced a major push for urban transport with a 600 crore allocation for Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 expansion. The move is aimed at strengthening connectivity and meeting the growing transportation needs of the rapidly expanding city.
Presenting the budget, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka highlighted that the metro network will be extended to key areas including the Old City and airport corridor. The expansion is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve daily commuting for lakhs of passengers.
Currently, the Hyderabad Metro serves around five lakh passengers every day, making it a vital part of the city’s public transport system. Recognizing its importance, the government is now planning to take over metro operations, marking a significant shift in the state’s transport strategy.
Under Phase 2, the government has proposed a large scale expansion covering over 76 kilometers with multiple new corridors. The total cost of the project is estimated to exceed 24 thousand crore, with funding expected from both state and central sources along with institutional support.
Alongside metro expansion, the government has also allocated 2,654 crore under the H CITI initiative to improve urban infrastructure. Investments are also being made in water supply and sewage treatment projects to support the city’s long term development.
Officials emphasized that Hyderabad is already among the fastest growing cities in the country and the focus is now on transforming it into a world class urban center. The metro expansion is seen as a key step in achieving this goal while enhancing quality of life for residents.
With new corridors and improved infrastructure in the pipeline, Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the city’s future growth and connectivity.
