A child marriage was prevented by Hyderabad police just an hour before the wedding ceremony at a community hall in Borabanda on Wednesday. Officials confirmed that the bride was only 17 years old and immediately halted the event.

The marriage preparations had already been completed and relatives from both families had gathered at the venue. The groom had reportedly travelled from Nizamabad district for the ceremony, which was scheduled to take place in the afternoon.

Acting on information, police teams along with Childline officials and representatives from a non governmental organisation reached the community hall before the wedding rituals began. Authorities checked the girl’s documents and confirmed that she was a minor.

Family members and relatives requested officials to allow the ceremony to continue, but the authorities refused permission and explained the legal consequences of conducting the marriage of an underage girl. Officials also warned the priest and family members that strict action would be taken if they attempted to continue with the wedding.

Following counselling and discussions with the family, officials obtained written consent and shifted the girl to the Government Girls Observation Home at Nimboliadda for her protection and care.

Police said strict monitoring is being carried out to prevent child marriages and protect minors from illegal and forced marriages.
