A long standing fight by farmers in Mahabubabad has finally ended in their favour, with the consumer commission directing a seeds company to compensate them for losses caused by fake seeds.

After nearly nine years of legal struggle, eight farmers have been awarded compensation of Rs 2 lakh each. In addition, the commission has ordered the company to pay Rs 10000 per farmer towards legal expenses, taking the total compensation to Rs 16.8 lakh.

The case dates back to 2016 when farmers from Kambalapalli village purchased chilli seeds from a dealer who claimed they were suitable for local conditions. Trusting the assurance, each farmer bought seed packets and sowed them in their fields.

Initially, the crop appeared healthy, with plants growing well. However, when the flowering stage arrived, the plants failed to produce yield, leaving farmers shocked and facing heavy financial losses.

Suspecting foul play, the farmers approached agriculture officials and filed a complaint regarding the seeds. A field inspection was conducted, and a report was prepared based on the condition of the crops.

Following this, the farmers moved the consumer commission in Hyderabad. During the hearing, the seeds company argued that their products were of standard quality and presented lab reports to support their claim.

However, the commission found inconsistencies in the documents submitted by the company, including discrepancies in dates and lack of proper government certification. It also questioned why the company representative failed to participate in the official field inspection.

After reviewing all evidence, the commission concluded that the farmers had indeed suffered due to defective seeds. It ruled in favour of the farmers and ordered the company to pay compensation.

The verdict has brought relief to the affected farmers and is being seen as a strong message against the sale of fake seeds. It also highlights how persistence and legal awareness can help farmers seek justice in cases of agricultural fraud.
