In a major step toward cleaner mobility and driver welfare, the Telangana government has introduced a new scheme aimed at converting petrol and diesel autos into electric vehicles. The initiative is expected to bring significant relief to auto drivers by eliminating daily fuel expenses.
The scheme, launched under Rajiv Yuva Vikasam, focuses on reducing air pollution across the Hyderabad core urban region. As part of the plan, nearly 1.25 lakh autos operating within the city limits will be gradually converted into electric vehicles through a retrofitting process.
To support the initiative, the government has allocated 200 crore in the 2026 to 27 budget. The cost of conversion, which ranges from about 1.20 lakh for swappable battery systems to around 2 lakh for fixed battery setups, will be covered through welfare corporations, ensuring that drivers do not face financial burden.
Officials highlight that shifting to electric autos will not only cut fuel expenses but also reduce maintenance issues associated with traditional engines. This is expected to improve earnings and reduce operational stress for drivers.
Currently, a large number of autos in the region run on petrol diesel CNG and LPG. The government plans to prioritize converting petrol and diesel autos first, which could help complete a major portion of the transition within five years.
The initiative is also driven by environmental concerns, as reducing emissions from autos will contribute to better air quality in Hyderabad. With phased implementation, the government aims to achieve a balance between economic support for drivers and long term sustainability goals.
